Hi and welcome to this website.
My Own Server started with my desire to create my own web server. I had tried to do so some years ago with Apache, but after installing it, I didn’t have the first clue what to do next. I could start, stop, and restart it, but I didn’t know how it worked beyond that.
Around mid-December 2008, I decided to give it another try. I wanted to create my own server with a phpBB forum on it. After spending several hours and not being able to get phpMyAdmin to work after installing each component separate, I was fixing to scrap it and just stick to paid hosting. But while doing some searching around, I stumbled across XAMPP and couldn’t believe what I had found.
All I had to do was run a simple install program and it was done. phpMyAdmin worked perfect and my very own server was up and going. I knew a little bit about port forwarding and I finally had a public website started. I must let you know that XAMPP is NOT designed to be used as a production setup and you should carefully consider and research security risks before making a public website. Otherwise you risk having your server hacked and loosing your data on it.
The Apache Friends forum for XAMPP is down right awesome! There’s lots of support there and I’ve gone from not knowing what the crap I am doing to making tutorials on how to install and configure it on multiple OS’s. I decided since I had spent so many hours going through dead-end article after dead-end article and still not understanding how it works, I would create a website people can go to and learn everything in one place, from installing their server software to advanced configurations and installing a whole multitude of add-ons for their website.
And here’s my hard work. I’ve spent many hours putting it together and trying to learn more and then share it with whoever finds it useful. At the same time, I try really hard keeping everything organized and easy to navigate. I also tried to make it a step-by-step site for those getting started so they’re not just bombarded with documentation in a “Ok, here it is” manner. As I mentioned, I’m not doing this to make money or for any other reason besides just to help someone like myself out that is fed up with wasting time trying to do what’s really a simple thing.
So please leave me some feedback and tell me what you think. If you have any suggestions, I’d love to hear them. I’m always looking for some help, especially when it comes to Linux. I’m trying to learn it and get familiar enough that I can also create tutorials for it too, but it’d be great to have others helping to solve some of the difficult obstacles I’ve ran into.
Thanks again for stopping by and like I said, I really hope you find this site useful.
